  1. Buyer pays $30.00 + $0.00 shipping = $30.00
  2. Listing fee = $0.20
  3. Transaction fee = 6.5% × $30.00 = $1.95 (charged on shipping too)
  4. Processing = 3% × $30.00 + $0.25 = $1.15
  5. Total fees = $3.30, which is 11% of the order
  6. Payout = $30.00 − $3.30 = $26.70
  7. Profit = $26.70 − $8.00 item − $0.00 postage = $18.70

What Etsy charges

Four fees can land on a single Etsy order, and only the first is a flat amount:

  • Listing fee — $0.20. Charged when you publish, whether or not the item sells, and again every time the listing renews after four months.
  • Transaction fee — 6.5%. Of the item price plus shipping and gift wrap.
  • Payment processing. A percentage plus a fixed amount, set by the country of your bank account. In the US, 3% + $0.25.
  • Offsite Ads — 15% or 12%. Only on orders that came from an advert Etsy placed, capped at $100.00 per order.

The fee everyone miscalculates

Etsy's transaction fee is charged on the order, not the item. Etsy's own wording is that the 6.5% applies to "the total cost of the item, along with shipping and gift wrap". Payment processing works the same way, taken from the total sale price including shipping and any sales tax.

So a $30.00 item with $10.00 postage is treated as a $40.00 order. The transaction fee is $2.60, not $1.95. A calculator that applies the percentage to the price alone understates your fees on every order where you charge for postage — and it is a common bug in the free tools that rank for this search.

The corollary is that splitting the total differently changes nothing. Charging$40.00 with free postage and charging $30.00 plus $10.00 postage produce an identical fee. Any advice to "put more in shipping to save on fees" is wrong on Etsy.

The formulas

  • Order total = price + shipping you charge.
  • Fees = listing + 6.5% × order + (processing % × order + fixed) + offsite % × order.
  • Payout = order total − fees.
  • Profit = payout − what the item cost you − what postage cost you.

Worked example: a $30 item, US seller

You list a handmade item at $30.00 with free postage. It costs you $8.00 in materials. Your bank is in the US and the order did not come from an advert.

  1. Listing fee = $0.20.
  2. Transaction fee = 6.5% × $30.00 = $1.95.
  3. Processing = 3% × $30.00 + $0.25 = $1.15.
  4. Total fees = $3.30, or 11% of the order.
  5. Etsy pays you $26.70; after the $8.00 of materials your profit is $18.70, a 62.3% margin.

Pricing backwards from the profit you want

Adding your target profit to your costs gives the wrong price, because the fees are charged on the final figure — raising the price raises the fee, which eats into the increase. The calculator's second tab solves it properly:

price = (profit + costs + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − total percentage fees)

For $15.00 of profit on an item costing $8.00, a US seller with no advertising needs to list at $25.91. Naively adding$15.00 to $8.00 would give $23.00 and leave you roughly$2.65 short once Etsy takes its cut.

Fees by order size

A US seller, no advertising, postage included in the price.

$100.00$9.95$90.0510%
$250.00$24.20$225.809.7%

The percentage falls as orders get larger because the $0.20 listing fee and $0.25 fixed processing charge are spread over more money. On a$10.00 order they alone are 4.5% of the sale, which is why very cheap items are hard to make work on Etsy.

The listing fee is the one that hides

Three of Etsy's four fees only appear when something sells, which makes them easy to account for: they come out of money you just received. The listing fee is different. It is charged when you publish, renews every four months, and applies to items nobody has bought.

Per sale it is trivial. Across a catalogue it is not. A shop with 200 listings pays$40.00 every renewal cycle regardless of sales, and if that shop makes 20 sales a month the listing fees work out at roughly$0.50 per actual sale — several times the$0.20 that appears in the per-order maths above.

The calculator counts one listing fee per sale, which is right for items that sell promptly. If your sell-through rate is low, divide your real monthly listing spend by your real monthly sales and treat that as the true figure.

Offsite Ads, and when you stop having a choice

Offsite Ads is the fee most likely to surprise a growing shop. Etsy advertises your items on other platforms and charges 15% of the order total when one of those adverts leads to a sale — but only on those orders, and never more than$100.00 on a single one.

Below $10,000.00 of sales in a rolling 365-day period, you can opt out. Above it, Etsy enrols you permanently — "for the lifetime of your shop" — though the rate drops to 12%. That makes the threshold a genuine cliff in your cost base, and it is worth modelling before you reach it rather than after.

On an attributed order, an Etsy shop's total take rises from around 11% to roughly23%. If a large share of your sales come through adverts, that blended rate is the number to price against, not the headline 6.5%.

Common mistakes

  • Applying the 6.5% to the price only. It covers shipping and gift wrap too.
  • Loading the price into postage. Fee-neutral on Etsy — the total is what is taxed.
  • Forgetting the listing fee renews. Every four months, and on every quantity sold.
  • Assuming Offsite Ads apply to every order. Only to orders that came from one.
  • Pricing by adding a markup to cost. Use the reverse tab; the fees scale with the price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Etsy take per sale?

On a $30.00 order with no advertising, a US seller pays $3.30 — that is 11% of the order. It breaks down as a $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 payment processing. Offsite Ads, when they apply, add 15% or 12% on top.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes, and this is the detail most calculators get wrong. Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee applies to “the total cost of the item, along with shipping and gift wrap”, and payment processing is taken from the total sale price including shipping and sales tax. Charging postage separately does not avoid any percentage fee.

What price should I charge to make a certain profit?

Switch the calculator to “Target profit → price”. Because the percentage fees apply to the whole order, you cannot simply add your target to your cost. To clear $15.00 on an item costing $8.00, a US seller needs to list at $25.91, not $23.00.

How much are Etsy payment processing fees in my country?

They vary. The US is 3% + $0.25, the UK 4% + £0.20, Canada 3% + C$0.25, Australia 3% + A$0.25 and Germany 4% + €0.30. The rate follows the country of your bank account, not the buyer’s. Pick yours in the calculator.

Can I avoid the 15% Offsite Ads fee?

Only below the threshold. Shops that have made under $10,000 in any rolling 365-day period can opt out. Once a shop passes $10,000, Etsy enrols it permanently, though the rate drops to 12%. The fee applies only to orders that actually came from an Offsite Ad, and never exceeds $100 on a single order.

Why is my payout lower than this calculator says?

Common causes: the order came through an Offsite Ad (add 15% or 12%), you are on a currency-conversion fee, or you bought a shipping label through Etsy, which is billed separately from the fees here. Sales tax Etsy collects and remits is not your revenue, but it does sit in the total that processing is charged on.
